3. Team order rule needs a re-think

    by admin

Formula One should look at abolishing the controversial ban on team orders after Ferrari escaped further punishment for their manipulation of the German Grand Prix result. That is the view of the Daily Telegraph?s Tom Cary, who is of the opinion that the team orders rule now needs to be seriously looked at because of its obvious shortcomings.

?Whether you are for or against team orders, if the FIA could not back up its own rules and nail a competitor in a blatant case such as this the rule really does need reviewing. Perhaps Ferrari?s thinly-veiled threat to take the matter to the civil courts if they were punished too harshly scared the governing body, who as much as admitted the flimsiness of its rule.”

Paul Weaver, reporting for the Guardian in Monza, was in favour of the ruling which keeps alive Ferrari?s slim chances in an enthralling championship.

?The World Motor Sport Council was right not to ruin a compelling Formula One season by taking away the 25 points Alonso collected in Germany. That would have put him out of the five-man title race. But the council was widely expected to increase the fine and possibly deduct points from the team, as opposed to the individual. In the end, it could be argued that common sense prevailed. But the decision will dismay those who were upset by the way Ferrari handled the situation as much as anything else.?

The Daily Mail’s Jonathan McEvoy expressed outrage at the FIA tearing up its own rule book by allowing Ferrari to escape unpunished.

“Although the race stewards fined them £65,000 for giving team orders in July, the FIA World Motor Sport Council, to whom the matter was referred, decided not to impose any further punishment. It leaves the sport’s rulers open to derision. It was, after all, their rule they undermined. In a statement, the WMSC said the regulation banning team orders ‘should be reviewed’.”

  7. What you need to know from this week on ?The Ultimate Fighter?

    by admin

What you need to know from this week on ?The Ultimate Fighter? It’s week two of “The Ultimate Fighter,” the episode where the fighters get their teams, their home for the next six weeks and we figure out which fighters will get the most air time. Who will be in the first quarterfinal fight of the season? What will the house look like? How will Jason “Mayhem” Miller creatively use a heap of tires? Join me for a recap and spoilers, won’t you?

Reality TV show cliche of the week: The fighters moved into their house, shocked by the digs and availability of food. Then they eat. A lot. Remember that these are featherweights and bantamweights who will all need to weigh in for their fights soon. Foreshadowing?

Team picks of the week: Michael Bisping won the coin toss and chose the first pick instead of the first fight. The teams are (with some identifiers):

    Team Bisping
Bantamweights: Louis Gaudinot (the guy with the green hair)
T.J. Dillashaw (Team Alpha Male guy)
    John “Prince” Albert
Josh Ferguson (Guy whose brother didn’t make the show)

    Featherweights: Diego Brandao (Jackson’s guy)
Akira Corassani (Best name in the house guy)
    Marcus Brimage
    Stephen Bass

    Team Miller
Bantamweights: John Dodson (Team Jackson guy)
    Johnny Bedford (Texas bro)
Dustin Pague (Heel-clicking dude, A.K.A. Ron Santo)
    Roland Delorme (Canadian bro)

Featherweights: Dennis Bermudez (Maury Povich guy)
    Bryan Caraway (Miesha Tate’s boyfriend)
    Dustin Neace
    Steven Siler

Bisping claimed that Miller didn’t take a single fighter who he wanted. Miller said that he chose based on his coaches’ strengths. As they were leaving, Miller remarked that Bisping’s fighters didn’t look happy to be on his team. To the cameras, Bisping said, “Why wouldn’t they be happy? I won the Ultimate Fighter. I’ve won 17 fights in the UFC. He’s the Strikeforce reject.”

Technology of the week: Miller stopped by the fighters’ house to bring compression suits for each fighter to wear to recover from each practice. Something tells me these pieces of technology will be floating in the pool soon.

Fight pick of the week — Bryan Caraway (Miller) vs. Brimage (Bisping): Brimage was already concerned about cutting his weight to 145 lbs., as he sat at 157 lbs. Bisping taught Brimage some of his weight cutting tricks, and both fighters made weight on their first try.

Prank of the week: Miller and his boys filled Bisping’s room at the training center with tires. When Bisping did get into his room, he had to knock down the door, giving this season its first door casualty. R.I.P, TUF door.

Showtune of the week: As Caraway and Brimage faced off at weigh-ins, Corassani led Team Bisping in a chant that pumped up Brimage, but just made Team Miller laugh. “That was ADORABLE,” Miller said.

Fight of the week — featherweights: Bryan Caraway (Team Miller) vs. Marcus Brimage (Team Bisping)

Round 1: Caraway quickly went to his strength, wrestling, by taking down Brimage. He controlled him on the canvas, took his back and put his legs in. Brimage’s active arms made it difficult for Caraway to slap on a choke, as he kept Caraway’s hands from his neck and also landed enough punches that Caraway’s eye swelled up. This is how the entire round went.

Miller and Bisping traded barbs in the first round. First, Miller laughed at Bisping’s instructions in grappling, and when Miller said, “He’s panicking,” Bisping yelled back, “We’re panicking!?!”

Round 2: Brimage came out with fast striking to start the round, but Caraway again answered with a takedown. He took Brmage’s back with ease, but this time Brimage could get back to his feet. Caraway shot in a few more times, and when he was able to get him down, Brimage was able to get out. Halfway through the round, Caraway took Brimage down and landed a nasty elbow. He took Brimage’s back, and this time was able to finish the rear naked choke.

Caraway is our first winner, but the two gave viewers a fun, active fight. This season is already shaping up to be an upgrade.

  9. Bellator 51: Warren Starched In 64 Seconds

    by admin

    MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

While the majority of MMA fans were wrapped up in the aftermath of UFC 135, Bellator Fighting Championships treated fans to some scintillating bantamweight action. Bellator?s 51st event featured the opening round of the 135 pound tournament, and boasts some of the finest competitor?s in the division today. In all, eight bantamweights took to the cage in hopes of advancing to the next round of the tournament, of course, only four emerged victorious.

Ed West opened the tournament up when he collided with fan favorite Brazilian, Luis Alberto Nogueria, who entered the tournament as one of the notable favorites. Ed West proved that hard work and tenacity inside the cage pays off, as he never contemplated wresting, instead opting to utilize his range and pick away at Nogueira. In the end, the judges saw in favor of West, who did a fine job of avoiding the aggression of ?Betao?.

The action only increased as the night progressed. Marcos Galvao displayed his continued evolution while meeting former WEC titleholder Chase Beebe in the second featured fight of the night. The fight proved not only competitive, but extremely memorable. Both men fought for the finish from the jump. Beebe looked to have more than a single guillotine choke sunk tight; his Brazilian foe refused to succumb. Rather, Galvao pushed forward, showcased some highly improved wrestling, and bombarded Beebe with numerous windmill shots that hurt the American repeatedly. While a close fight, Galvao looked the definite victor; Fortunately for him, two of three judges agreed.

Highly touted Nova Uniao prospect, Eduardo "Dudu" Dantas lived up to the enormous amount of hype behind him, as he soundly outclassed the durable Wilson Reis. Dantas pushed forward from the opening bell, showing no fear of Reis or his punching power. After five minutes Dantas was the obviously superior fighter. He showed no fear in the pocket, and launched vicious shots at Reis. With just over a minute having ticked away in the second frame, Dantas unloaded with a massive flying knee that dropped Reis. A series of follow up punches rendered his Brazilian foe unconscious. Dantas passes another test with flying colors.

In the evening?s main event, brash featherweight title holder, Joe Warren welcomed former Olympic Bronze medalist, Alexis Vila to the promotion. Vila, who is 40 years old, came out early and established his tournament intentions early. The Cuban defector unleashed a heavy shot that had Warren reeling. Though the outspoken champion appeared to recover fairly well, his rebound didn?t last too long. A brutal left hook completely starched Warren just 64 seconds into the fight. The first time bantamweight competitor was unconscious long before his head bounced off the mat violently.

The loss marks Warren?s first defeat since submitting to Bibiano Fernandes at the 2009 Dream 11 – Featherweight Grand Prix Final. Two blemishes now mark Warren?s record; the standout wrestler has assembled an impressive 5-1 record for the Bellator promotion, and despite coming up brutally short on Saturday evening, he still holds a firm grasp on the promotions featherweight title.

With the upset victory banked, Vila emerges a favorite to advance to the finals. Should bracketing favor Vila, and see him paired with Ed West or Marcos Galvao, his chances of advancing increase significantly. Should fate deal a cruel hand, the dangerous 40 year old may find himself facing the future of the division in the form of Eduardo Dantas.
